The mineral pyrite (also known as iron pyrite) is iron sulfide, the most common of the sulfide minerals. Pyrite crystallizes into an isometric crystal system and is most commonly found associated with other sulfides or oxides in quartz veins, metamorphic rocks, sedimentary deposits including coal beds and as a replacement mineral in fossils. Pyrite is also known as ” Fools Gold”. While there are other shiny, brassy colored minerals, pyrite is by far the most common and most frequently mistaken for gold. Pyrite is a favorite of mineral collectors due to its golden metallic luster and interesting crystals. pyrite is so common in the Earth’s crust that it is found in almost every possible environment in numerous forms and varieties.
One of the most unusual and striking varieties of pyrite are the disc-shaped pyrite “suns”, which exhibit striations radiating from the center like rays of the sun. These unique specimens are recovered from underground coal mines near Sparta, Illinois, USA, where they occur in narrow compacted seams of slated inter-bedded in 300 million-year-old Pennsylvanian Period coal deposits. The origin of the pyrite suns has been a subject of speculation and debate. Some authorities have speculated they originated as fossils that were subsequently replaced with pyrite, others believe that they are concretions spread out under pressure and forced to grow in a laterally compressed radiating manner in the seams of slate.
Pyrite “suns” are believed to enhance metaphysical abilities.
Gem silica is the high-grade form of chrysocolla. It is a great collectors item!
Chrysocolla is a copper mineral that can be cryptocrystalline or botryoidal, found in the oxidation zones of copper deposits. Since the gem silica is typically harder than chrysocolla, it cuts beautiful stones. Gem silica is typically botryoidal (appearing to have bubbles) and harder than chrysocolla. Gem silica can occur with malachite, translucence, pockets of quartz, and an absolutely stunning color! It can be found in Cornwall, Pennsylvania, Zaire, Arizona, and other areas. It was used by the American Indian for healing and strength. It is believed to have a number of healing qualities from regulating the thyroid, helping with infections, strengthening the body’s resistance, self awareness, accepting situations, to stress relief. We have several new specimens in stock – stop by to see them or look at them in our on-line store. We have rough, specimens, stones, and high grade in stock.

Amethyst is a purple colored quartz. The name comes from a Greek word meaning “not drunken”!! The quartz family (silicates) comes in many colors – clear, white, smoky, purple, pink (rose), yellow, blue, and green. The purple color in amethyst is caused by trace amounts of ferric iron. It is one of the most popular gemstones in history. It is found in many locations, a few of which are Africa, Brazil, Uruguay, the United States, and Madagascar. It comes in several different forms – the clean faceting quality, massive amethyst quartz, and crystal clusters.
Amethyst varies in color from very pale to deep purple, some even having a pinkish tone. It has been valued for thousands of years for its legendary energy qualities and beauty. The Greeks believed that it would prevent intoxication, relieve frustrated passion, and calm anger. Amethyst is viewed today as a stone of purification and protection. It is thought to aid in overcoming bad habits and curbing overindulgences. It stimulates the crown chakra and is beneficial in meditation.
